Why Is It Important To Know The Torque of Hand Tools?

Torque is one of the most important specifications of hand tools. In order to understand why that is, we must first answer two key questions. What is torque? How is it measured?

Torque is the rotational equivalent of linear force. In physics, it is referred to as moment of force and indicates the tendency of a force to rotate the body to which it is applied. This concept originated with Archimedes’ investigation into levers.

In the diagram below, we see that torque equals length multiplied by force. Therefore, the farther from the object or axis you apply a given amount of force, the greater the torque.

Most fastening hand tools are intended to tighten and release bolts and nuts. Bolts and nuts are actually relatively fragile. If a user applies excessive torque, the nut or bolt is likely to break. That's why most auto-repair manuals indicate the maximum recommended torque for maintenance jobs.

On the other hand, if the user applies insufficient torque, the bolt will not be properly secured, and this is extremely dangerous. In automobiles or motorcycles, loose bolts may cause serious accidents. That's why Tien-I’s professional hand tools are designed to address the unique torque specifications of various applications.

The unit measurements of torque and conversions across various markets are shown in the table below.

European Standard : N-m

American Standard : ft-lb

Japan Standard : cm-kg
