What is Socket Wrenches & Ratchets? Types, Features & Uses Buying Guide

What is a Socket Wrench and a Socket Set?

A socket is an hand tool that can be connected to a handle, with different sizes of drive profile used to grip various screws and nuts. A socket set typically includes various shapes and sizes of drive heads, which can be swapped on a wrench tool. A high-quality socket set usually contains a full range of standard drive and sizes (including both imperial and metric), along with multiple accessories that can be used for different standard nuts and bolts. Therefore, purchasing a high-quality, professional, complete socket wrench set (e.g., 150-200 pcs) means that you will rarely encounter a screw or nut that you cannot handle.

Moreover, if you are dealing with a task requiring high torque — in other words, a lot of force is needed to loosen something — a socket will definitely be more convenient than a wrench.

The biggest difference between a socket and a traditional wrench is the ratchet handle. This type of ratchet handle features various designs, allowing the user to apply greater torque to nuts or bolts without needing to reposition the wrench each time. This makes tightening or loosening quicker and easier, significantly reducing the strain on the user's hand and wrist.

Most ratchet handle also have a switch that allows the user to change the direction to either clockwise or counterclockwise. This makes working in tight spaces, such as under a cabinet or during car tire replacement, much more comfortable.

What is a Ratchet Handle?

When a buyer asks "What is a ratchet handle?", they usually want to learn about the different types and brands of ratchet handles, as well as whether the additional features provided by these ratchet meet their needs. High-quality ratchet handle often come with additional features, such as:

• Quick Release Ratchet Handle:

Allows for quick locking of the socket to prevent it from accidentally falling off during use, which is an essential feature for working at heights or some workplace caring FOC.

• Slim Head Ratchet Handle:

Features a slim head to ensure it can fit into narrow spaces.

• More Tooth Gear Ratchet Handle(e.g., 90 ~ 120 tooth gear):

In tight spaces where moving is difficult, more tooth gear ensures easier application of force. However, more tooth gear count also means that the torque is relatively lower.

• Extendable Ratchet Hanlde:

The extendable shaft allows for more leverage torque.

• Swivel Head Ratchet Handle:

Allows for 360-degree rotation, enabling vertical rotation at certain angles.

• Flexible Ratchet Handle:

Can be used to apply force at horizontal angles.

• Dust Proof Ratchet Handle:

Prevents dust from entering the ratchet mechanism, effectively extending the lifespan of the ratchet wrench.

There are also various types of socket adapters available on the market, which can further improve the functions of ratchet handle.

The Common Chrome Socket: Hex Socket Sizes and Lengths

Hexagon sockets are the most common, and having a complete set of hex sizes should allow you to handle 90% of the standard nut fasteners in daily work. Common hex socket sizes include:
Metric: 4mm to 24mm
Inch: 3/16" to 1-1/4"
Depending on the working environment of screws and nuts, socket lengths are categorized into stubby, standard, deep, and extra-deep. Some screws and nuts in more confined precision instruments, such as automotive chassis or electric vehicle electronic components, require very tight access during disassembly, making an ultra-short hex socket, such as Patented Tien-i Stubby Hex socket, a better choice.

Some SUVs have extra-deep nuts, or construction site has extra-long bolts, in which cases a long or extra-deep socket is necessary. Tien-i has produced the world's shortest 1/4"dr. 18mm socket to the extra-deep 1/2"dr. 328mm socket.

Other Types of Socket Besides Hex Sockets:

1. Universal Joint Socket:

Professionals who everyday use universal joints alongside sockets often chose universal joint sockets, which replace both the universal joint and the socket, saving time and space. For more information, refer to this article:

2. E Socket ; Torx Socket

Torx sockets, also known as star sockets or E sockets, are specifically designed to remove Torx standard screws and nuts, which resemble a star shape. These are commonly seen in automotive repair and high-value mechanical equipment. For more information, refer to this article: Torx Socket Screw what?

3. 12 Points Socket

Both hex and 12-point sockets can be used on hex nuts. The main difference is the convenience of the angles and torque capacity. The more points a socket has, the more engagement angles it provides with the hex nut. Compared to a hex socket, a 12-point socket has twice as many engagement angles, making it easier to use. For more details, refer to the article:

4. Super Lock Socket

An enhanced version of the hex socket, Super Lock Sockets are used to remove damaged nuts. Their unique wavy design ensures greater torque efficiency. This design is commonly seen in European brands. Tien-i produces super lock sockets in Taiwan.

5. Spline Socket

Spline sockets have a gear-like shape and can be used to remove various shapes of nuts, which is why they are also called universal sockets.

6. Square Socket

Square Socket designed for square nuts, which are primarily found on heavy equipment and trucks.

7. Magnetic Impact Socket

The magnetic impact socket features a magnet inside the hex hole to prevent nuts from falling during removal. This feature is highly popular on assembly lines.
Tien-i manufactures magnetic pneumatic sockets in Taiwan.

8. Spark Plug Socket

A spark plug socket is used to remove spark plugs and comes in various lengths and sizes. For more details, refer to the article:
How to Select the Right Spark Socket

9. Thin Wall Socket

Thin wall sockets have a particularly thin wall to ensure they fit into narrow spaces.

10. Impact Socket

Impact sockets are designed to be used with pneumatic or power tools. Compared to chrome sockets, impact sockets differ in material, specifications, size, and heat treatment. For more details, refer to the article:

11. Impact Univeral Socket

Tien-i impact universal socket, designed for power tools or impact wrench, offers the functionality of a manual universal socket, but without the need for slow manual rotation. It can be used to quickly handle screws and nuts that are difficult to access with standard tools.  To know more, click below article: How far will universal joint socket bend? Impact VS. Hand

12. Impact Low Profile Socket

Tien-i Impact low profile sockets can be used in tight workspaces, such as electric vehicles, precision instruments, or large machinery. Tieni produces impact low profile sockets, which can be paired with various wrenches to reduce spatial constraints, making them easier to operate.

13. Extra Deep Socket

Extra deep sockets are perfect for tasks such as diesel injectors, turbo systems, rear bumper covers, valve cover bolts, spark plugs, and clutch bleeder valves. These sockets feature a deep groove and extra deep interior, exceeding 125mm in depth.

14. Super Extra Deep Socket

Super extra deep sockets are suitable for the construction industry where extra-long bolts are used. These sockets feature an extra deep interior, usually exceeding 300mm in depth.

15. Non-Sparking Socket

Non-sparking tools are used in environments containing flammable liquids, gases, dust, or residues to prevent fire and explosions. These tools are typically required by the national safety standards for work in such environments. Tien-i has the ability to produce quality non-sparking hand tools in Taichung, Taiwan, using qualified Taiwan materials.

How to Use a Socket Wrench

To use a socket wrench is easy. Although details may vary between brands, the basic steps are same:

1.) Select the Right Socket:

Choose a socket based on the size of the nut you need to tighten or loosen. A complete socket set will typically include many different sizes, so selecting the right socket is often the most challenging part!

2.) Verify Hex Size (if the nut is hexagonal):

Knowing whether you are dealing with metric or imperial fasteners will be helpful. If unsure, you can try several sockets that appear to fit to determine the correct size. If you feel too loose, switch to a smaller size.

3.) Avoid Using an Oversized Socket:

Never use an oversized socket, as it may strip the screw, making it difficult to remove in future.

4.) Attach the Socket to the Ratchet Handle:

After selecting the appropriate socket, snap it onto the ratchet handle. If the socket's square hole does not match the ratchet handle's square drive, you have selected the wrong size. The major drive sizes are:
1/4" (6.3mm)
3/8" (9.5mm)
1/2" (12.7mm)
3/4" (19.0mm)
1" (25.4mm).

5.) Change the Rotation Direction:

Locate the switch on the ratchet handle to set the rotation direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) as needed for tightening or loosening.

6.) Just do it:

Turn it, rotate back, or work two hands! This is also where the  ratchet handle and socket outperforms a regular wrench — Fast! Fast is key!
